Each light has two separate layers, the background and the invisible ghost light. The backgrounds will fill in and gaps behind your window, whilst the light will force emission through your windows. Having these elements separated means you don't have to have an extremely bright background just to light your interior. The strength of the lights range from very subtle to very bright, so you should find a sweet spot for your renders.
