The earliest known butterfly fossils date to the mid Eocene epoch, between 40–50 million years ago. Butterflies and moths are indicators of a healthy environment and healthy ecosystems. They are an important element of the food chain and are prey for birds, bats and other insectivorous animals, as well as, providing a wide range of environmental benefits from pollination to natural pest control.
